Aitreya Upanishad : Shanti mantra

Aitreya Upanisad is the only one of the ten principal upanishads - for which Shankara has weitten commentaries - taken from Rg Veda
Named after Rshi Aitareya ( son of Itara his mother)
Called MahiDasa as he invoked Bhuma Devi and got knowledge - mahi is a name for bhumi

Aitareya Brahmana portion deals with rituals Aitareya Aranyakas deals with upasana and Aitareya Upanisad deals with Janna yoga

Ch 1 has 3 sections
Ch 2 has 1 sections
Ch 3 also has 1 section

Shanti paatha
auṃ vāṅ me manasi pratiṣṭhitā
mano me vāci pratiṣṭhita-māvīrāvīrma edhi |
vedasya ma āṇisthaḥ śrutaṃ me mā prahāsīranenādhītenāhorātrān
saṃdadhāmyṛtam vadiṣyāmi satyaṃ vadiṣyāmi tanmāmavatu
tadvaktāramavatvavatu māmavatu vaktāramavatu vaktāram |
auṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||
Aum! May my speech be based on (i.e. accord with) the mind;
May my mind be based on speech.
O Self-effulgent One, reveal Thyself to me.
May you both (speech and mind) be the carriers of the Veda to me.
May not all that I have heard depart from me.
I shall join together (i.e. obliterate the difference of) day
And night through this study.
I shall utter what is verbally true;
I shall utter what is mentally true.
May that (Brahman) protect me;
May That protect the speaker (i.e. the teacher), may That protect me;
May that protect the speaker – may That protect the speaker.
Aum! Peace! Peace! Peace!

Let there be harmony between my thoughts and speech. Let my personality be integrated. Disintegration means death. For a upanishad student mind and speech are most important & hence prayer is let me not say anything I don't mean. Krishna in Gita calls this Arjavam.

Vak tapas is very important and esp so in a seeker.

Aavihi means Jyotih - occurs in Mundaka ch 2 - here Jyoti is Brahman;  may you O light of Brahman become evident to me, may I have clear knowledge of Brahman. In karma kanda we don't have knowledge of God only a representation. For knowing God we require a lot of mental refinement. By karma kanda and faith we get the mental purity to get a opportunity to know the real knowledge of God.

Hence the students prayer "May you reveal yourself to me"
The student is glorifying both mind and speech "you are the carriers of the Veda  -you are responsible for bringing Veda into my life"

For all the years of brahmacharyam with vedic hearing and repetition, repeatedly Veda enters into his mind - veda adhyayanam

May the teaching remain in my mind, may the knowledge not dissipate.. how?.. only way is by constant repetition and revision... "let me spend day at night revising this teaching"

rtam is knowledge in keeping with the shastra
satyam is shastriya anushtanam - a life practiced in keeping with rtam

This is the meaning of rtam and satyam given in Taitt Up

rtam is the empirical truth - refers to truth as a value for speaking.
satyam is the Absolute Truth - refers to the Ultimate Reality which is satyam jnanam anantam Brahman

May Lord protect me as well as my GUru
Om Shanti repeated thrice to ward off obstacles from all 3 sources :adhyatmika adhibhoutika & adhideivika.
